Conteúdo: Resumo: A previsão do aumento da [CO2] atmosférica e das mudanças climáticas globais no presente século, ligadas entre outros ao aumento da temperatura, apresentam-se como fatores de risco para a cultura do café de acordo com o seu zoneamento agroclimático. Contudo, após exposição de longo prazo a condições adversas, as plantas podem desenvolver mecanismos de aclimatação/tolerância. Por outro lado, o impacto positivo do aumento da [CO2] no metabolismo fotossintético (e a ausência de down regulation) poderá contribuir para mitigar os efeitos de altas temperaturas sobre o cafeeiro, algo que ainda não foi elucidado para Coffea sp.. Portanto, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar as respostas fisiológicas e bioquímicas do cafeeiro às alterações ambientais de temperatura e [CO2], utilizando o metabolismo fotossintético como ferramenta para avaliar a aclimatação e tolerância. Para tal, plantas de Coffea arabica L. cv. IPR 108 foram cultivadas durante um ano a 25/20 ºC (dia/noite) sob condições controladas de (umidade relativa, irradiância e fotoperíodo), com 380 ou 700 ?L CO2 L-1, e sem restrições de água, nutrientes e espaço para desenvolvimento radicular. A temperatura foi então gradualmente aumentada (0,5 ºC/dia) a partir de 25/20 ºC até 42/34 ºC. O funcionamento da maquinaria fotossintética foi avaliado às temperaturas de 25/20 ºC, 31/25 ºC, 37/30 ºC e 42/34 ºC por meio de trocas gasosas (capacidade fotossintética por meio da evolução de O2) e dos parâmetros de fluorescência da clorofila a [fluorescência inical (Fo), eficiência fotoquímica máxima do PSII (Fv/Fm), taxa de transporte linear de elétrons (ETR) e a eficiência fotoquímica real do PSII (Fv?/Fm?)]. Os resultados mostraram um maior desempenho metabólico das plantas cultivadas sob maior [CO2]. A partir de 37 ºC, em condições normais de [CO2], houve um comprometido da capacidade fotossintética, no entanto, apenas a 42 ºC houve um impacto nos processos relacionados com o transporte de elétrons. As plantas desenvolvidas a 700 ?L CO2 L-1 mantiveram a eficiência do PSII mesmo a 42 ºC.. Os resultados mostraram que a maior [CO2] possibilitou à C. arabica cv. IPR 108 a preservação do funcionamento da maquinária fotossintética em temperaturas elevadas, o que é bastante relevante em termos das alterações climáticas previstas. Abstract: The predicted enhancement of air [CO2] and of global climate changes in this century, linked, e.g., to increased temperatures, appear as a risk factor for coffee crop according to it agroclimatic zoning. However, after exposure to long-term adverse conditions, plants may trigger acclimation/tolerance mechanisms. Furthermore, the positive impact of the enhanced [CO2] on the photosynthetic metabolism (and absence of down regulation) might help to mitigate the effects of high temperature on the coffee plant, which was never characterized for Coffea sp.. Therefore, this study aims at linking the physiological and biochemical responses of coffee to temperature and [CO2] changes using the photosynthetic metabolism as probe to evaluate the acclimation and tolerance of the plant. For that, Coffea arabica L. cv. IPR 108 plants were grown for one year at 25/20 ºC (day/night) and under controlled conditions (temperature, relative humidity, irradiance, photoperiod), 380 or 700 μL CO2 L-1, without nutrient, water and root space limitations. The temperature was then increased gradually (0.5 ºC/day) from 25/20 ºC up to 42/34 ºC. The photosynthetic functioning was assessed at the temperatures of 25/20 ºC, 31/25 ºC, 37/30 ºC e 42/34 ºC through gas exchange (photosynthetic capacity through O2 evolution) and some parameters of chlorophyll a fluorescence [initial fluorescence (Fo), photochemical efficiency maximum of the PSII (Fv/Fm), linear electron transport rate (ETR) and actual photochemical efficiency of the PSII (Fv'/Fm')]. The results showed a higher metabolic performance in plants grown under higher [CO2]. From 37 ºC the plants under normal [CO2] showed strong impacts on the photosynthetic capacity, but the electron transport was affected only by 42 ºC. The plants grown under 700 μL CO2 L-1 maintained higher PSII efficiency at 42 ºC. The results showed that rising [CO2] enabled the IPR 108 maintain functional the photosynthetic machinery at high temperatures, which is very relevant considering the predicted future climatic changes.
