Conteúdo:	RESUMO - Este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar 10 cultivares do gênero Brachiaria com o intuito de identificar caracteres que possam diferenciar as mesmas, bem como estabelecer cultivares exemplos para União Internacional para proteção das Obtenções Vegetais (UPOV). As cvs. Mulato, Mulato II e B. ruziziensis apresentam diferenças para os caracteres HAB, PB, FSTR, PESP, CEST e CANT, sendo possível utilizá-los para diferenciá-las. No grupo das B. humidicola, apenas dois caracteres (CEST e CANT) são suficientes para caracterizar e diferenciar as cultivares, porém, os caracteres HAB, PRA, PESP, INFLOR e FIFLOR corroboram as diferenças entre as mesmas. Dos 15 caracteres avaliados, apenas cinco (PPB, FSTR, IES, CEST e CANT) não apresentam diferenças para as cultivares B. brizantha e a cv. Basilisk. Dentre as cultivares avaliadas, duas delas (Mulato e B. ruziziensis) não apresentam homogeneidade e, portanto, não podem ser utilizadas como cultivares exemplo. Sendo assim, os caracteres quantitativos discretos e os qualitativos permitem diferenciar as cultivares em uso. ABSTRACT - This experiment had the objective of evaluating 10 cultivars of Brachiaria in order to identify characters to differentiate amongst them, as well as to establish model cultivars for the International Union for the Protection of New Variety of Plants (UPOV). The cvs. Mulato, Mulato II and B. ruziziensis present differences for the following traits plant growth habit, density of leaf sheath pubescence, shape of raquis in transverse section, density oh hairiness, stigma and anther colour, and it’s possible to use these characters to differentiate them. In the group formed by B. humidicola only two traits (stigma and anther colour) are sufficient to characterize and differentiate the cultivars, even the traits plant growth habit, density of rachis pubescence, density of hairiness, time of beginning of flowering and time of ending of flowering confirm the differences between cultivars. Only five traits (distribution of leaf sheath pubescence, shape of raquis in transverse section, spikelet insertion and stigma and anther colour) do not exhibit differences for the cultivars B. brizantha and cv. Basilisk. In this trial two cultivars did not exhibit homogeneity (Mulato and B. ruziziensis) therefore cannot be used as models. Discrete quantitative as well as qualitative traits allowed discrimination all the cultivars in the market.
