Description: Historical experiente shows distinct agricultura1 stages in the process of economic dwelopment. During the initial stage, production is almost exclusively limited to food and fibers. Industrial production is in its initial phase, and the service sector is not important. Technology is based on the utilization of land and labor; investments in physical and human capital are inexpressive and illiteracy is high. Natural factors determine demographic growth. These are mainly the availability of food and the occurence of diseases. Birth rates and mortality are high, while family planning is not practiced. The population is predominantly young and rural, at equilibrium as determined by the availability of food, or increasing at a fast rate. Per capita income is relatively low.
