Burning is one of the most common agricultural practices in Brazil. The use of fire in agriculture reaches many different ecological andproduction systems, generating various environmental impacts in local and regional scales. The extent of land reached by burnings in Brazil has been the target of concern and controversy. The experimental objective of this proposal is to evaluate the potential use of SPOT4/VEGETATION imagery for estimating the extent of burned areas in the Southern Amazon Basin, Brazil. In the first phase, we gained more knowledge about the study area which has 800,000 sq. km in Mato Grosso State. The data simulation was done using mosaic NOAA/AVHRR images every 15 days. Data was obtained for channels 1, 2 and 3 and for NDVI during the winter time. Also, burning areas in this region were detected at the same time NDVI maps were generated for half of the month in September, October and November. Maps of the total burned areas were also generated for the same time. Vegetation maps were completely finished for eight sheets in the region, in the scale 1:250,000. All these maps are presented in this work. The analyses conducted concentrate on space-temporal patterns and on the quantification of burned areas. The preliminary assessment shows a spatial relationship between the reduction of NDVI and the ocurrence of burnings, specially in September.
