Abstract: Silicon (Si) use in agriculture has grown in recent years. However, one of the challenges lies in the difficulty of defining a method for extracting Si from the soil that is both efficient and allows for advances in this element’s interpretation. This chapter reviews the main methodologies used over the years, contributing to a deeper understanding of Si availability assessment. Here, we present a basis for a current understanding of existing methodologies, consolidating important information for future improvements in studies on the bioavailability of Si in soil. Advanced techniques using synchrotron radiation, near-infrared spectroscopy, and chemical fractionation provide possibilities for innovation in the quantification of available Si in the soil.
