Description:	RESUMO - Dados de pesos aos 205 (P205) e 365 (P365) dias de idade, de 530 rebanhos Nelore dos diversos Estados brasileiros, no período de 1976 a 2000, foram utilizados para estimar efeitos genéticos direto e materno pelo método de Máxima Verossimilhança Restrita aplicada a um modelo animal. No modelo incluíram-se os efeitos fixos de grupo contemporâneo e região, idade da vaca ao parto (covariável) e os efeitos aleatórios genéticos direto e materno. As médias e os desvios-padrão dos pesos P205 e P365 nas diversas regiões estudadas foram 168,46 ± 23,83 e 211,77 ± 33,3 (Sul), 167,76 ± 28,1 e 219,85 ± 36,7 (Sudeste), 167,11 ± 26,8 e 217,18 ± 36,6 (Centro-Oeste), 167,20 ± 24,6 e 215,25 ± 34,7 (Norte) e 173,75 ± 28,9 e 227,88 ± 39,9 (Nordeste), respectivamente. As herdabilidades para o efeito genético direto e materno do P205 nas diversas regiões estudadas foram 0,01 e 0,18 (Sul), 0,16 e 0,17 (Sudeste), 0,29 e 0,27 (Centro-Oeste), 0,21 e 0,29 (Norte) e 0,16 e 0,09 (Nordeste), respectivamente e do P365 foram 0,05 e 0,18 (Sul), 0,13 e 0,09 (Sudeste), 0,29 e 0,17 (Centro-Oeste), 0,20 e 0,17 (Norte) e 0,06 e 0,10 (Nordeste), respectivamente. As correlações genéticas entre os efeitos direto e materno para P205 e P365 nas diversas regiões foram –1,00 e 0,00 (Sul), -0,27 e 0,10 (Sudeste), -0,49 e –0,44 (Centro-Oeste), -0,39 e 0,19 (Norte) e -0,38 e –0,54 (Nordeste). A seleção baseada no peso à desmama pode ser mais efetiva nas regiões Sudeste (R2) e Centro-Oeste (R3). ABSTRACT - Body weight records at 205 (205BW) and 365 (365BW) days of age of 530 Nelore herds from several States of Brazil during 1976 to 2000 period were used to estimate genetic and maternal effects by Restricted Maximum Likelihood methodology using animal model that included the fixed effects of contemporary group and region, age of cow (covariate) and random genetic and maternal effects. The means and standard deviation for 205W and 365W considered for each of the South, Southeast, Central west, North and Northeast regions were: 168.46 ± 23.83 and 211.77 ± 33.3, 167.76 ± 28.1 and 219.85 ± 36.7, 167.11 ± 26.8 and 217.18 ± 36.6, 167.20 ± 24.6 and 215.25 ± 34.7 and 173.75 ± 28.9 e 227.88 ± 39.9, respectively. The direct and maternal heritabilities for 205BW were, respectively, 0.01 and 0.18 (South), 0.16 and 0.17 (Southeast), 0.29 and 0.27 (Central-west), 0.21 and 0.29 (North) and 0.16 and 0.09 (Northeast), and for 365BW were, respectively, 0.05 and 0.18 (South), 0.13 and 0.09 (Southeast), 0.29 and 0.17 (Central-West) and 0.20 and 0.17 (North) and 0.06 and 0.10 (Northeast). The correlation between additive and maternal effects for 205BW and 365BW were -1.00 and 0 (South), -0.27 and 0.10 (Southeast), -0.49 and –0.44 (Central west), -0.39 and 0.19 (North) and -0.38 and -0.54 (Northeast). The selection based on pre-weaning traits is more effective in Southeast and Central West regions.
