Conteúdo:	Resumo - Foram estudados três períodos de descanso (PD) da pastagem de capim tanzânia ('Panicum maximum'), determinados em função do tempo para a expansão de 1,5, 2,5 e 3,5 novas folhas e período de ocupação (PO) de 5 dias. O ganho médio diário (GMD) dos ovinos mantidos sob o PD de 1,5 folhas foi superior (124,94 g/dia) ao daqueles mantidos sob PD de 3,5 folhas (55,48 g/dia) (P<0,05), sem, no entanto, diferir daqueles mantidos sob PD de 2,5 folhas (P>0.05).O ganho médio diário por hectare (GMDha) seguiu a mesma tendência observada para o GMD, sendo que os animais mantidos sob PD de 1,5 folhas apresentaram desempenho superior (7,73 g/ha/dia/) aos mantidos sob PD de 3,5 folhas (4,55g/ha/dia) (P<0.05). Quando se comparou o ganho de peso total em 8 meses e o ganho de peso total ao longo do ano observou-se que a tendência de superioridade do PD de 1,5 folhas foi mantida. Foram obtidas produções de 1885,72 e 2828,58 kg de peso vivo animal por ha para os períodos de 8 meses e 1 ano, respectivamente, quando se trabalhou com PD de 1,5 folhas, enquanto para o PD de 3,5 folhas os valores obtidos foram 1110,42 e 1665,63 kg de PV animal por ha para os mesmos períodos (8 meses e 1 ano). Para a taxa de lotação, observou maiores valores para PD de 3,5 folhas em relação ao PD de 1,5 folhas. Conclui-se que os PD menores (1,5 e 2,5 folhas) apresentaram melhor resposta biológica, pois propiciaram desempenho e produtividade animal superiores, apesar de suas menores taxas de lotação. Abstract - Three Tanzania grass (‘Panicum maximum’) pasture rest periods (PD), defined as the time to the expansion of 1.5; 2.5 and 3.5 new leaves per tiller, were evaluated, with a five days grazing period (PO). The average daily gain of the sheep on the 1,5 leaves PD pasture was superior (124.94 g/day) to those on the 3.5 leaves PD pasture (P<0.05), however, without significant difference (P>0.05) from the sheep on the 2.5 leaves PD pasture. The average daily gain per hecatre followed a similar tendency, with the male sheep on the 1.5 leaves PD being superior (7.73 g/ha/day) to those on the 3.5 leaves PD pasture (4.55 g/ha/day) (P<0.05). When comparing GPT8m and GPTyear, the 1.5 leaves pasture sheep superiority was maintained. Productions of 1885.72 and 2828.58 kg body weight/ha were obtained to the eight months and the whole year, respectivamente, projection from the sheep on the 1.5 leaves PD pasture, whereas to the 3.5 leaves PD pasture, productions of 1110.42 and 1665.63 kg body weight/ha were obtained to the eight months and the whole year projections, respectivally. Relating to stocking rate, higher figures were observed to the 3.5 leaves PD pasture, than to 1.5 leaves PD pasture. It can be concluded that the shorters rest periods ( 1.5 and 2.5 leaves) showed higher biological responses, as provided higher body weight production per hectare in spite of their lower stocking rate.
