The increasing resistance of bacterial isolates to biocides used in dairy farming represents a significant challenge to maintaining hygienic standards and controlling bacterial infections. Biocides, such as benzalkonium chloride (BC), hydrogen peroxide (HP), chlorhexidine (CLO), and lactic acid (LA), are widely employed for disinfecting surfaces and milking equipment to prevent mastitis and other infections. However, the anaerobic digestion process may alter the phenotypic characteristics of enterobacteria released into the environment, potentially affecting their susceptibility to biocides. This study aimed to evaluate the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics related to biocide resistance in E. coli from an anaerobic digestion system operated with dairy cattle waste.
