Conteúdo: In Brazil, there are extensive areas of degraded pastures. It is necessary to establish degradation levels using quality indicators for different biomes and regions. It is also essential that the evaluation of degradation levels be easily measurable. The objective of this study was to assess soil and pasture quality indicators for separating degradation levels of pastures in Cachoeiras de Macacu, State of Rio de Janeiro. Three levels of degradation were visually separated: N1: light, N2: moderate, N3: severe. Evaluations were carried out in the winter season. Plots of 500 m² were delimited. Pasture cover rate was evaluated using the line-point intercept method (rope method), and pasture height by the ruler method. Results showed that forage cover was predominant in N1 (97.5%), progressively reducing in N2 (76%) and N3 (58.5%), with a proportional increase in invasive plants and bare soil. Pasture height was also influenced by degradation, ranging from 33 cm in N1 to only 4 cm in N3. Biomass showed a similar pattern, with production of 3224 kg DM/ha in N1, 1504 kg DM/ha in N2, and 808 kg DM/ha in N3. This study shows that height, biomass, and cover rate are simple, accessible, and effective indicators for diagnosing the state of pasture degradation.
