| Descripción: | Abstratc: Natural products play a vital role in the development of antiviral drugs, particularly against herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2), which infect up to 90% of the global population. Current treatments are limited, and increasing resistance to acyclovir complicates disease management. Chikungunya fever, caused by the chikungunya virus, which accounted for 127,000 cases in Brazil in 2023, lacks an approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment. Some substances already isolated from plants of the Baccharis genus, such as trichothecenes, flavonoids and terpenes, showed the pharmacological potential of these species. In this context, the study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic activity using the sulforhodamine B assay, as well as the antiviral potential of extracts and fractions from Baccharis species against chikungunya virus and HSV-1 (KOS and 29-R strains) using the plaque reduction assay. After evaluating the antiviral activity against chikungunya virus, it was observed that the extracts of Baccharis retusa DC. and B. reticularia DC., Asteraceae, were the most active, with IC50 values of 2.9 and 3.6 μg/ml, respectively, presenting SI values of 124 and 122, respectively. Regarding antiherpetic activity, B. retusa and B. reticularia extracts presented IC50 values of 7.3 and 15.9 μg/ml against KOS strain, and 9.9 and 18.9 μg/ml against the 29-R strain, with SI values of 50.23 and 27.68 against the KOS strain, and 37.05 and 24.33 against the 29-R strain, respectively. Dereplication of B. retusa and B. reticularia extracts by UPLC-DAD-ESI–MS/MS discloses the presence of chlorogenic acid derivatives and flavanones or dihydroflavonols in both species. |
