| Conteúdo: | Abstract: Climate emergency poses an unprecedented challenge to vulnerable populations, threatening above all low- and middle-income communities that depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, such as family farmers. Extreme events such as heat waves, droughts, and extreme rainfall are expected in tropical regions, threatening the cultivation of various plant species, including many that fall under the vegetable crops group. For this reason, our team has been working on multiple fronts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and to increase the resilience and adaptability of vegetable crops, thereby safeguarding not only the right to an equilibrated environment but also the rights to food, employment and a dignified life. This position paper presents a series of Research, Development, and Innovation actions and results that have been conducted by Embrapa Vegetables and its partners, under our leadership, to safeguard family-based vegetable crops in the face of projected climate and risks scenarios. We focus the discussion on the use of Climate Intelligence and the enhancement of vegetable crops resilience to achieve limate justice and a just transition—concepts well established by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and aligned with Brazil’s legal framework. Over the past 15 years, our work has been building an ecosystem to protect this specific population, and we intend to continue this evolution over the coming years, advancing technologically whenever possible and necessary. |
