Conteúdo: Methane represents an energetic loss to the animal, therefore, reducing enteric CH4 emissions is not only environmentally favourable, but can also improve feed conversion efficiency in ruminants if production is not compromised. To date, nutritional manipulation has been a promising and widely accepted strategy to reduce enteric CH4 emissions from ruminant livestock. This review aims at providing an update of the nutritional abatement strategies being explored. Practices, such as the inclusion of grain and ionophores in the diet have long been used by the industry as a means of improving production yet, they may also lower CH4 emissions. Similarly, including lipids or lipid-rich by-products (i.e. distiller’s grains, glycerol) has received increasing interest. The selection of yeast strains to reduce CH4 emissions remains an interesting approach yet most studies have been inconclusive and contradictory, or have yet to be confirmed in vivo. The use of direct fed microbials, organic acids, essential oils and tannin- or saponins- containing plant extracts may allow for further reductions in CH4 emissions from ruminants however, the optimal inclusion level and the persistence of their effects remain uncertain. It is important to note that each production system is different, and therefore a holistic, lifecycle approach to mitigation should be adopted when considering any particular strategy, as often, a reduction in emissions from one area of production may lead to an increase in another.
