Description: The present status of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is the result of nearly five centuries of exploltation since the colonial times and land use for the expansion of agriculture as well as for the development of urban areas, It is estimated that the remnants cover only 4% of the original forest area. According to the Brazilian Report for the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development, this forest stretches through nearly one milllon square kilometers in almost alí coastal areas of the country. Effective actions for the restoration of forest cover have been extremely shy. The main bottleneck has been the Inexistence of an active seed bank for the specles of native forests.
