Biomass is a way found by Nature to store solar energy in the form of chemical energy. As a primary energy source used worldwide it amounts to 1,200 (10-6% of the world Total Energy Supply -TE5) but unfortunately close to 80% of this is used very inefficiently and unsustainably, mostly as Fuel wood for cooking and house hearing. The main characteristics of biomass is that it is produced in a decentralized way. covering most regions in the globe, can be used for secondary energy production in a continuous way, oflers a wide option of feedstock and has a considerable local impact.
