Beef quality from steers of different genetic compositions raised in Southern Brazil This study aimed to evaluate quantitative and qualitative beef traits from steers of different genetic compositions. Data on 43 steers of five different genotypes, Angus (ANAN), Nellore (NENE), Angus x Hereford (ANHH), Angus x Nellore (ANNE) and Angus x Caracu (ANCA), slaughtered around 26 months of age, assessing beef quality aspects. The rib eye area of ANNE crosses exceeded that of ANAN and heterosis in this crossing was 15.3% (P = 0.0223). The genotype ANAN had a higher intramuscular fat percentage when compared to the ANNE and NENE groups, while the tenderness of NENE beef (7.1 kg) was lower than that of other genotypes (between 4.33 and 5.02 kg). Crossbreeding between the Angus and Nellore breeds is an alternative to increase rib eye area of beef steers, while maintaining the same level of tenderness of purebred Angus animals or their crosses with other taurine breeds.
