Perennial grasses evaluation of genus Brachiaria and Panicum in northern regions of Rio Grande do Sul state Warm season perennial grasses can be useful in crop-livestock systems in southern Brazil. The aim of this study was evaluate forage yield and nutritive value of warm season grasses in northern of Rio Grande do Sul state. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of UPF, in Passo Fundo county, during 2008/2009 growth season. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments were Marundu, Aruana and Mombaça guineagrass cultivars and ADR 500 pearl millet as check treatment. Three evaluation were done before grazing to estimate forage DM yield, leaf blade yield and forage nutritive value. Total forage DM yield of three harvests was superior to Aruana (5,778 ha-1) and Mombaça (6,515 kg ha-1), while pearl millet yielded (3.969 kg ha-1) and Marandu (2.745 kg ha-1). Mombaça guineagrass had de best leaf blades characteristics, however it was not have the best nutritive value. Leaf blades CP concentration was better in Aruana, but Marundu had the best digestibility and forage nutritive value in the stem/sheath portion.
