Brazilian agriculture in recent years has received considerable support from the public sector. One of the primary policy tools has been the increasing financia support for research and extension. This paper deals with relationships between dissemination of new technology, production systems, agricultura1 research and extension activities. Questions are raised which have been under discussion since the origin of rural extension in 1948. The dissemination model, which is the operational basis of the Rural Extension Service under the leadership of EMBRATER, is reviewed; some problems in dissemination of technology are discussed.pt_BR
