Description: | Canola (Brassica spp.) is a typical oilseed of temperate regions, in latitudes between 35º to 55º. Its grains yield 38% oil, recommended for healthy diets and the most used in Europe for biodiesel production. Its meal is adequate for feed. Experiments at low latitudes in Goiás (17o to 19o) and in Northeast Brazil (<7o), and the world’s first canola farmers fields under tropical conditions of GO and MG have, since 2004, shown its potential role to increase the Brazilian grain production. The main advantages of canola are: 1) price similar to soybean (thus called “winter soybean”); 2) established trade; 3) yield increase as well as insect-pests and diseases reduction in the succeeding crops of soybean, beans, wheat, maize, etc. because it belongs to the Crucifera family; 5) higher tolerance to drought (deeper roots) and to frost than maize. Research State of Art: Cultivars and production technology are already available (http://www.cnpt.embrapa.br/culturas/canola), requiring only regional adjustments. Beyond the Research State of Art:: Millions of hectares in Southern and West-Central Brazil, where soybean and maize are cropped, can produce canola as a second crop of food or energy in the year allowing use optimization of land, machinery, personnel, etc. while meeting the growing demand for food and renewable energy, avoiding the need for expansion of cropping land and associated environmental problems. Brazil can became a very important world canola producer. |
