Description: | Deadly symbiosis, for insects only. The nematodes genera Heterorhabditis, Steinernema and Neosteinernema, are named entomopathogenic [EPN], because they act symbiotically with a bacterium, specific and deadly for insects. These EPN are showing more efficiency than bacteria and fungi against soil insects, thanks to its locomotion and searching capacity. The Embrapa Wheat Research Center is developing the first specific project on EPN in the whole Embrapa. It was started on April 2007 and had already 34 native EPN isolates. The best strains will be tested at field conditions where the best application technology will be determined. The research is running in the Insect Pathology laboratory and got the support of local Technical Committee and Embrapa Wheat direction. In Brazil, EP studies are recently beginning mainly at Federal University of Lavras, State University of Norte Fluminense, Federal University of São Carlos and Biological Institute. Up to now the North hemisphere countries researchers already developed commercial products against horticulture and pasture pests. The bigger challenges are to get cheaper products, to increase the shelf-life and to select new isolates for pests not yet controlled by the actual EPN strains. In a short time it is possible to offer this kind of biological control innovation to farmers. To achieve that it is necessary to establish the research nucleus and to organize a transfer technology strategy. |
