Description: Field studies were conducted during 1995-96 at Goiania, and Jussara, GO, Brazil, to determine the carry-over effect of fomesafen (250 and 500 g/ha), imazamox (40 and 80 g/ha) and acifluorfen (170 and 340 g/ha), applied to beans (Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Apore), on rotational crops (corn [maize] cv. AG 603, sorghum cv. Cargill C-42, rice cv. Maravilha and [pearl] millet cv. BN1) and to estimate the level of soil residues. Dissipation time (DT50) of fomesafen (37.5 days) was greater than that of acifluorfen (27.5 days) and imazamox (25.9 days). For both locations, the persistence of herbicides was greater in 1995 than in 1996. This was due to higher soil moisture content in 1996. The susceptibility of rotational crops to fomesafen and imazamox residues was (in decreasing order) sorghum, maize, pearl millet and rice, and for acifluorfen sorghum, maize, rice and pearl millet. The period (in days) between herbicide application and rotational crop planting (PAP) varied. The PAP for fomesafen (250 g/ha) was 69-132 for maize, 114-179 for sorghum, 29-95 for rice, and 52-111 for pearl millet. The PAP for imazamox (40 g/ha) was 68-111 for maize, 78-139 for sorghum, 25-75 for rice, and 40-102 for pearl millet. The PAP for acifluorfen (170 g/ha) was 56-89 for maize, 96-139 for sorghum, 61-95 for rice, and 43 to 82 d for millet.
