Description:	Resumo: Os projetos em desenvolvimento rural sustentável precisam proporcionar melhoria na qualidade de vida da comunidade estudada. Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo fazer uma análise exploratória para conhecer a comunidade de estudo, bem como caracterizar a comunidade tradicional de pescadores artesanais do Balneário Vila Yara em Altônia-PR, por meio de metodologias participativas. Constatou-se que existem 94 habitantes organizadas em 37 famílias, destas 11 vivem exclusivamente da pesca artesanal. A metodologia escolhida mostrou-se adequada para o estudo. Identificou-se que a territorialidade dos moradores sofre influência da existência de Unidades de conservação. Abstract: Sustainable rural development projects need to improve the quality of life of the studied community. This research aims to make an exploratory analysis to know the Balneário Vila Yara in Altônia-PR, an artisan fishermen community, and characterize the community through participatory methodologies. We found that there are 94 inhabitants organized in 37 families, 11 of Them wo live exclusively from artisan fishing. The chosen methodology was adequate for the study. It was identified that the territoriality of the residents is influenced by the existence of protected areas.
