Description: The largest quantities of N lost from grazed pastures are in the urine and this loss is a key process in pasture degradation. In this study the recovery of 15N-labelled urea in the soil and by Brachiaria decumbens over a period of 442 days (3 harvests of the grass) was evaluated in two degraded pastures near Campo Grande, MS. In a degraded pasture on a red latosol only 3.0 % was recovered by the grass and 21 % in the soil, total N loss was 76 %. In a similar pasture on a dark red latosol 4.3 % was recovered by the plants and 33.5 % in the soil, total loss was 62 %.
