Description:	RESUMO - O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a morfologia e a qualidade de couros ovinos, oriundos do cruzamento de reprodutores Hampshire down com matrizes sem raça definida (SRD), criados a pasto na região de Campo Grande, MS, em sistema rotacionado com pastagem de “Panicum maximum” cv. Aruana, “Brachiaria humidicola” cv. Comum e “Brachiaria dictyoneura” cv. Comum, com suplementação mineral a pasto e abatidos aos doze meses de idade. Após o abate dos animais, as peles foram conservadas por salmouragem e salga e posteriormente curtidas até o estágio semi-acabado. Foram realizados testes qualitativos de resistência dos couros à tração e ao rasgamento, assim como eletromicrografias. Os couros foram classificados através das características extrínsecas: três couros de sexta e três couros de sétima. A resistência dos couros ao rasgamento e o alongamento no ensaio de tração foram maiores (P<0,01) na direção transversal. A força de tração e a resistência à tração apresentaram comportamento inverso, pois foram maiores na direção longitudinal (P<0,02), confirmando informações da literatura sobre o comportamento dos couros de mamíferos. As eletromicrografias evidenciaram o denso entrelaçamento dos feixes de fibras de colágeno responsáveis pela resistência dos couros frente aos testes físico-mecânicos. Todos os resultados foram superiores aos valores referência encontrados na literatura, indicando um couro de qualidade intrínseca excepcional. ABSTRACT - The work, had as an objective to evaluate the morphology and the quality of sheep leather, coming from the crossing of male Hampshire down with matrices without a define breed (SRD), breeding on a pasture of Campo Grande region, Mato Grosso do Sul state, in crop rotation with pastureland of Panicum maximum cv. Aruana, Brachiaria humidicola cv. Common and Brachiaria dictyoneura cv. Common, with mineral supplementation on pasturage and slaughtered at the age of 12 months. After the slaughter of the animals the skins were brine conservated and then salted, tanned afterwards up to semi-finishing stage. Quality resistance leather tests to traction and to tearing have been done, as well as eletromicrography. Leathers received the following commercial classification: three leathers of sixth and three leathers of seventh. Leather resistance to tearing and the elongation on the traction trial were bigger (P<0,01) on the transversal direction. The traction power and the resistance to traction showed converse behavior, they were bigger at the longitudinal direction (P<0,02) confirming literature information about the mammal leather behavior. Eletromicrographies showed the dense entwined of clusters of collagen fibers responsible for the leathers resistance before physic-mechanics tests. All the results were superior to the resistance values found at the literature, indicating an exceptional intrinsic quality leather.
