Description:	RESUMO - Estudos desenvolvidos na Embrapa Gado de Corte revelaram alterações na função imunológica e reprodutiva em bezerros filhos de vacas Nelore com deficiência de Zn na suplementação mineral. Especificamente na função reprodutiva, o Zn participa da estruturação da cromatina nuclear, multiplicação e diferenciação dos espermatócitos, na maturação epididimal, além de atuar como co-fator no metabolismo endócrino. Com base na avaliação seminal quinzenal a partir dos 18 meses de idade, comparou-se diferentes medidas morfométricas da cabeça espermática e correlacionou-se com índices de condensação anormal da cromatina nuclear de touros criados a campo e que foram submetidos a níveis diferentes de Zn na dieta (T1, n=4, 0 mg/kg/dia e T2, n=2, 60 mg/kg/dia). Os touros do T1 apresentaram percentuais inferiores de espermatozóides morfologicamente normais e de motilidade, e superiores de defeitos de cabeça, peça intermediária e cauda. As medidas de comprimento (µm), largura inferior (µm) e área total (µm2) foram superiores (p<0,01) nos touros do T1 em relação ao controle (T2). As correlações estabelecidas sugerem que há tendência das alterações de cromatina estarem presentes em maior percentual em touros com alterações nas medidas morfométricas da cabeça espermática. Desta forma, touros com deficiência de Zn na dieta podem sofrer alterações na morfometria da cabeça espermática e, por conseqüência, estarem mais susceptíveis a alterações na cromatina nuclear. ABSTRACT - Studies from Embrapa, Campo Grande, MS, Brazil, revealed alterations in the immunological and reproductive function of Nelore calves born from cows receiving mineral supplementation deficient in Zn. The role of Zn on the reproductive function is related to the structuring of the nuclear chromatin, the multiplication and differentiation of spermatides, the epididymal maturation, besides acting as co-factor in the endocrine metabolism. Seminal parameters, including sperm heads morphometric measurements, were evaluated in 18 months Nelore bulls. These results were compared and correlated with abnormal condensation of the nuclear chromatin indexes. The bulls were submitted to different levels of Zn in the diet (T1, n=4, 0 mg/kg/dia and T2, control, n=2, 60 mg/kg/dia). The bulls of T1 presented lower percentile of morphological normal sperm and motility, and higher head and intermediate piece and tail defects. The length (µm), inferior width (µm) and total area (µm2) measures were higher (p <0,01) in the T1, in relation to the control (T2). The established correlations suggest that there is a tendency of chromatin alterations to be higher in bulls with alterations in the morphometric measures of sperm head. Afterwards, diets deficient in Zn may cause alterations in the morphometry of the sperm head, resulting in major susceptibility to alterations in the nuclear chromatin in bulls.
