Descripción:	Resumo: O trabalho teve como objetivo investigar a importância do efeito materno na estimação dos componentes de (co)variância e parâmetros genéticos sobre o peso aos 112 dias de idade (P112) em ovinos Santa Inês. Foi utilizado modelo animal que incluía ou não os efeitos aleatórios, genético aditivo materno, covariância genética entre os efeitos direto e materno, ambiente permanente materno e o efeito comum de ninhada, além do erro aleatório associado a cada observação. A escolha do melhor modelo foi baseada no Critério de Informação Bayesiano de Schwar (BIC). O modelo que continha os efeitos genético aditivo, materno, comum de ninhada foi o que melhor se ajustou a característica, indicando que a não inclusão desses efeitos em estudos genéticos para P112 pode levar a estimativas de parâmetros genéticos e componentes de covariância errôneas. Abstract: The study had the aim to investigate the importance of maternal effect on the estimation of the (co)variance and genetic parameters on the weight at 112 days of age (P112) in Santa Ines sheep. The animal model used included or not the following random effects, maternal additive genetic, genetic covariance between direct and maternal effects, maternal permanent environmental effect and common litter effect, besides the random error associated with each observation. The choice of model was based on the Bayesian Information Criterion Schwarz (BIC). The model containing additive genetic, maternal, common litter effects was the best fit feature, indicating that the non-inclusion of these effects in genetic studies for P112 may lead to erroneous estimates of genetic parameters and covariance components.
