Conteúdo: Oats is one of the most important crops in Wisconsin. Its acreage (nearly 2 million acres) is second only to corn of all grain crops. In most of this acreage it is seeded as a companion crop to new alfalfa seedings and the usual practice is to harvest oats for grain. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Statistical Service has recently reported a decrease in the acreage of oats along with an increase in the acreage of alfalfa. Since alfalfa is the most important crop in teh strate in terms of acreage, and since some of the disadvantages of oast as companion crop outweigh the advanrages, it appears that this is probably one of the teasons for this acreage decrease. Lodging undoubtedly is the major problem with this grain crop. Up to the present rime, crop breeders have not been successful in developing oast varietles or strains that are non-lodging under all conditions. Such achievement would certainly change the situation in Wisconsin and else where. Also, it has been recognized for many years that high levels of nitrogen in the soil increase the probability of lodging. Consequently, rates of nitrogen must be carefully controlled to avoid this hazard.
