Description:	Resumo: Um experimento conduzido na Fazenda Iracema, da EPACE, em Quixada, CE, foi realizado para comparar o desempenho pos-desmame de caprinos nativos e ovinos da raca Morada Nova. Desenvolveu-se em dois periodos de pastejo de nove meses - outubro/1978 a julho/1979 e outubro/1979 a julho/1980, compreendendo, cada um, estacoes seca e chuvosa. Um grupo diferente de animais machos, pesando em media, ao desmame(quatro meses de idade) 13,76 +/- 0,36Kg os caprinos, e 15,53 +/- 0,35Kg os ovinos, foi usado a cada periodo de pastejo. Experiencias anteriores indicaram que os pesos otimos para abate estao entre 22,42Kg e 28,00Kg e sao atingidos sob as condicoes de criacao tradicionais, apos 18 meses de idade. Neste trabalho, os caprinos atingiram 23,32 +/- 0,43Kg e os ovinos 27,13 +/- 0,36Kg, aos 11 meses, sendo que os ovinos foram sempre mais pesados, podendo se constituir em melhor alternativa para criacoes em sistemas de manejo como os deste trabalho. Abstract: An experiment carried out at Iracema Farm, of Empresa de Pesc4uisa Agropecuária do Ceará - EPACE -. in Quixadá, CE, Brazil, was set up to evaluate post-weaning growth rates of nativa goats and Morada Nova sheeps. It tasted two grazing períods of nine months each . October/1978 to July11 979 and October/1919 to JuIy11 980 - including dry and wet seasons each one. A different set of males, belonging to each species was used in each grazing period. Mean weíght of the animais at weaning were 13.76 ± 0.36 kg for goats and 15.53 ± 0.35 kg for sheeps. Past experiencies had showed that slaughtering weight for these animaIs is the range of 22.42 and 28.00 kg and are achieved after 18 months of age under traditionai raising systems. In this work, goats reached 23.32 ± 0.43 kg and sheeps 21.13 ± 0.36 kg at 11 months of age. Sheeps were ali the time heavier than goats, and may be a better choice to be raised under better management systems, as used in this work.
