| Descripción: | Intensive mechanised grain production systems in Brazil occupy over 40 million hectares (Mha). Most of this area is dedicated to soybean and maize production in summer in rotation with oats, wheat, or green manure crops in the winter. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was common to grow soybean continuously, followed by wheat using conventional tillage. Apart from the problems of pest and disease build up owing to low crop diversity, the twice-yearly intensive tillage led to loss of soil organic matter (SOM) and increasing soil erosion, especially on more sandy soils. |
