Performance of nelore and guzerá herds in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeast of Brazil. Abstract: A study was conducted to evaluate the environmental effects on birth weight (BW) and weight at 205 (W205), 365 (W365) and 550 (W550) days of age in Nelore (n = 1,099) and Guzerá (n = 2,017) breeds, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast of Brazil. Data were obtained from 14 herds, between 1977 and 1997. The statistical models, evaluated through analysis of variance, included the fixed effects of breed, herd (within breed), year and month of calving, sex of calf, raising system and dam?s age at caving as covariant. The average and standard errors for BW and W205 were 29.1 ± 0.3 kg and 171.8 ± 2.3 kg for Nelore, and 29.7 ± 0.3 kg and 174.4 ± 2.6 kg for Guzerá breeds, respectively. Morevover, weight at 365 and 550 days were 246.6 ± 4.6 kg and 335.4 ± 5.8 kg for Nelore and 261.4 ± 6.3 kg and 336.1 ± 6.8 kg for Guzerá breeds, respectively. Factors such as herd, year and month at calving, calf sex and raising system significantly affected all variables studied (P < 0.01). Guzerá were heavier than Nelore animals at birth (P < 0.01) and 365 days of age (P < 0.05), but these effect was not significant at weaning (205 days) and 550 days (P > 0.05). Cow?s age at calving influenced BW and weight at 205 and 550 days (P < 0.01), but not at 365 days. Therefore, several parameters should be taken into consideration for selection and management of Guzerá and Nelore herds.
