Description: Land surface temperature is a key variable in environmental studies and the monitoring of global changes. Currently the availability of fine spatial resolution thermal infrared sensors is limited in the actual polar satellite constellation. This represents limitations in local applications such as agricultural management and hydrological modeling. This paper presents a new procedure for disaggregating the MODIS 1 km thermal band to 500 meters' resolution. To execute the thermal sharpening procedure, different vegetation indexes were tested, especially those sensitive to surface soil moisture. Results show that the proposed algorithm is able to satisfactorily disaggregate surface temperature to 500 meters' resolution. Ten combinations of vegetation indexes resulted in determination coefficients between 0.89 and 0.94, and the errors at one standard deviation were less than 1º K for all models.
