Description:	Abstract: The bird-mammal tick-cleaning associations are considered an example of mutualistic interactions in which the birds (cleaners) obtain food, and the mammals (hosts) get rid from ticks. In some cases, this mutualistic relationship can be complicated by “cheating” during the cleaning session, where the cleaner also feeds on the host’s wounded tissue or blood. Here we report on tick-cleaning interactions between the yellow-headed caracara (Milvago chimachima) and the South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris) observed in the Brazilian Pantanal. Our observations indicate that tick-cleaning interactions between the caracara and tapir may not always have a fully mutualistic character. It seems that in some cases, tapirs’ willingness to accept cleaner birds may be reduced by the negative experience that the birds will also peck at the wounds. Tradução em português: As associações de aves e mamíferos para a limpeza de carrapatos são consideradas um exemplo de interações mutualísticas nas quais as aves (limpadores) obtêm alimento, e os mamíferos (hospedeiros) se livram dos carrapatos. Em alguns casos, essa relação mutualística pode ser complicada por "trapaça" durante a sessão de limpeza, onde o limpador também se alimenta do tecido ferido ou do sangue do hospedeiro. Aqui, relatamos interações de limpeza de carrapatos entre o carrapateiro (Milvago chimachima) e a anta sul-americana (Tapirus terrestris) observadas no Pantanal brasileiro. Nossas observações indicam que as interações de limpeza de carrapatos entre o carrapateiro e a anta podem nem sempre ter um caráter totalmente mutualístico. Parece que, em alguns casos, a disposição das antas em aceitar aves limpadoras pode ser reduzida pela experiência negativa de que as aves também bicam as feridas.
