Descripción: Effective soil surveys in Brazil started in the 1950s. The extensive territory, the scarcity of soil scientists, and the urgent need for soil resources information directed at agricultural development led to opting for small scale, low intensity reconnaissance surveys. The need then arose for soil classification at relatively high categorical levels. The reference base adopted, and later adapted, was the great group and suborder levels of the then official Soil COnservation Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture (SCS/USDA) system (Baldwin, Kellogg, and Thorp 1938) and added modifications (Thorp and Smith 1949).
