Description: The endosperm of lettuce acts as a barrier to germination at high temperatures. The study with the 'Everglades' cultivar indicates that the weakening of this layer requires the enzyme endo-β-mannanase (EBM). High-vigor seeds produce more ethylene and EBM activity, overcoming thermoinhibition at 35°C.
