Description: Abstract: Rapid expansion of mechanized agriculture has contributed to the reduction of natural areas over the Cerrado biome. Agricultural use of the NE Cerrado biome within the northeastern region of Brazil began in the 1980s, when rice, cashew nut fruit plantations, and subsistence agriculture were replaced by large grain crop production areas. Such land cover dynamics can be monitored by the use of remote sensing techniques. The objectives of this study were: i) quantify the different vegetation classes in the NE Cerrado that were converted to agricultural land use between 2002 and 2008; ii) analyze land cover change in a multiscale basis; and iii) evaluate the expansion of mechanized agriculture over the converted areas. Results indicate that most of the land cover change (1.23 million ha) occurred over Wooded Cerrado (WC); more than 25% of the total converted area happened from 2002 to 2008 for the mesoregions Sudoeste Piauiense; Sul Maranhense; e Oriental do Tocantins, and at least 30% of the converted areas were used for large scale agriculture. Future studies will be conducted to analyze the anthropogenic areas mapped by the PMDBBS dataset that were not identified in the MODIS cropland masks. Different factors will be evaluated such as plot size and its relation to MODIS spatial resolution, soil type or slope of the study area.
